It’s Canadian Down Syndrome Week, we are celebrating to show the world that Canada is where ALL people are valued, fully participating citizens.

We want to take this time to remind everyone that we are working in partnership with the Canadian Down Syndrome Society to bring presentations into schools, groups, colleges, teacher development days etc all across BC! BC People First is celebrating Community Living month with 2 important presentations about the important work we do advocating for a diverse community where all people are: included and involved; honoured and respected; seen for their abilities, and supported to participate.

Please join us on October 24th, in Coquitlam, 7-8:30pm for an Introduction to BC People First and Education on the the UN Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities.

You would make a great Advisor to the BC People first Board. An Advisor is a volunteer role with the BCPF Board that helps us with our work to have the self-advocate voice heard. You help us do our work, not do our work for us.
What you will give:
• Your gifts- what are you good at Numbers? Great, help our treasure. Good at writing, help us write amazing articles about what BCPF has been up to…etc.
• Patience
• Organized
• Your ear, we need people to listen….really listen
• Your knowledge on how things work
• Your enthusiasm for having the world hear the self-advocates voice!
• Your time 4 to 8 hours per month
• Make a one year commitment


What you will get:
• An opportunity to show your gifts
• Build skills
• An opportunity to be part of a Provincial , National and International organization

BCPF is so excited to be expanding our reach to our members. This year, we are bringing our conference to the beautiful Comox Valley, on Vancouver Island in COURTENAY BC.

Our conference and AGM 2016 is now open for registration. You can register by emailing us at bcpfcoordinator@gmail.com, and we will forward you all the details. Cost is $40.00 which includes lunch and all your snacks and refreshments throughout the conference, all catered by the delicious kitchen at the Coast Westerly Hotel and Convention Centre.

There are 3 Directors positions open for elections, so please consider who you would like to nominate from the regions: Lower Mainland-West, From North or the Kootenay, and Zone 1 Lower mainland East-Fraser Valley.

Our Board of Directors is thrilled to be visiting Vancouver Island, and look forward to meeting you all there!

2. Westerly Hotel and Convention Centre, 1590 Cliffe Ave Courtenay BC

BCPF Board members have been very busy this year working on creating awareness about Restraints and Seclusions in Schools, The Difficulties Living on PWD, and Meaningful Employment.

We’d like for you to learn more about BCPF, what we do, and how you can be a part of it all.

We will have Board members at the upcoming CLBC 2016 Self Advocacy Leadership Conference, which is being held in Burnaby, BC.

Our Board member, Conrad Tyrkin, will be speaking about BCPF as well as his own journey to Leadership as a Self Advocate. There will be many other great presenters!

It should be an empowering and inspirational day, and we hope many of you will attend, stop by our table to say hello and sign up for Membership if you have not joined.
